Summary

This tutorial will guide you in creating your own team in Microsoft Teams. You can pick and choose which individuals you would like to be in contact with sharing chat, voice calling, and file sharing as well as copy existing team channels. Individuals can be part of many different created team channels.

Steps

1. Open the Microsoft Teams application on your desktop machine.

2. Navigate to the Teams tab on the left side of your screen.

3. Within the Teams tab there is an option to join or create a team. Click the gear icon top manage your teams.

4. Next, navigate to the top right of the screen and click on Create a Team.

5. A new window will appear. You will have the option to build a new team or use an existing team to start with. Users can be removed or added later after you team is created. First, we will show you how to create a team from scratch.

6. You can choose between a Private or Public team to create. We are going to create a private team so there is control over who can join.

7. Next, type in your desired team name and description. Users who join the team will be able to see this information. We recommend using “DS” as a prefix in the naming scheme to clearly denote Development Services department employees as you will be able to invite others who use the Microsoft Teams application. Once you are finished filling out the information, click Create.

8. At this point you will be able to add Teams users to your newly created team by typing in their name and clicking Add.

NOTE: If you accidently add the wrong user you can delete them by click the X to the right of their name.

9. Your team will now show up in the Teams tab to the left of your screen. To add/remove members or change general team channel settings click the three dots for more options to the right of the team name.

10. Now that we have created a new team from scratch, we will go walk you through creating a new team using an existing Microsoft 365 group or team. Navigate to the Create a Team button presented in step 4. This time we want to select the Create from option.

11. Select an existing team or Microsoft 365 group. For this example we will choose Team.

12. Choose the existing team to invite to your new channel. For this example, we will use the existing DS – Example Team we created in the first example.

13. Below is an example of the options and permissions you can change when copying an existing team. When you are finished with these options, click Create.

14. At this point you will be able to add additional users to this team similarly to the first example in step 8. If you do not wish to add any additional users, then click Skip.

15. Your newly created copy of another team or group will appear in the left side of your screen in the Teams tab. You can select the three dots  for more options to edit this team.
